iPad Resources and Ideas

General

  1. Main "workhorses" for managing files: Dropbox and Notabililty.
    1. Dropbox - file management.
    2. Notabililty - for PDF files. Can annotate, take notes right on the document. Handwriting, text, and more.
  2. iPad For Novices page // iPad For Schools: Information, Links, and Resources // A Few More iPad Tips
  3. CamScanner app - uses the iPad camera to scan any (physical) document. Can store scanned document as PDF (for use in Notability) or as a photo.
  4. To take a screen shot, hold the Power button and click the Home button. It will flash/pause for a second.  The screen shot should be in your Photos (and can be cropped there).
  5. If you are on Twitter, follow @tonyvincent. He's an iPad guru!

Math Apps

  1. See list at iPad For Schools: Information, Links, and Resources

Number Line Generator (& video)

  1. Number Line Generator - great tool for making custom number lines (for use on worksheets, SmartBoard, web, assessments, etc.). Direct link to the tool.
  2. Video - "My fellow fractions!!" Passionate activist rises up and demands equity for all numbers, including fractions and decimals on the number line ;-)

CCSSM (Common Core State Standards for Mathematics) and PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) Updates

  1. Main page - Common Core Math Standards: Information, Links, and Resources (on Jim Olsen's home page)
    1. PARCC Calculator Policy - Cool! We are (finally) sending the right message to students.
    2. PARCC Model Content Frameworks for Mathematics (PDF) - Grades 3-11
    3. PARCC Item and Task Prototypes
  2. Fluency and conceptual understanding are expectations under CCSSM.
  3. An ISBE has formed a committee to develop a model curriculum (for K-11). They have started this fall. They are to be done by February 2013 (!). They are devloping an integrated ("I, II, III") high school curriculum. After February 2013 the ISBE may (finally) make a decision whether the 2014-15 PARCC Assessments will be integrated or traditional ("Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II").
  4. Algebra I changes - see handout.

Online Learning Games

  1. Math Playground - these games are flash and many will run in the Puffin browser. Some multi-player games.
  2. NCTM Illuminations (NCTM=National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Most are flash and will usually run in the Puffin browser.

  5. IXL - most of these aren't games, but I like this site because it is comprehensive K-HS, the word problems are pretty good, it keeps track of student work, and it runs in a normal browser - such as Safari on the iPad.
