WIU's Case Writer-in-Residence Week of March 17

MACOMB, IL - - Rick Bass, a writer and environmentalist from Montana, will be the Western Illinois University Lola Austin Case Writer-in-Residence for Spring 2008 during the week of March 17. As the Case Writer-in Residence, he will meet with various English classes and faculty throughout the week, as well hold individual meetings with students to discuss their writing.
Bass will also present two sessions which will be open free to the public. These include a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 question-and-answer session on the "Craft of Writing and Environmentalism" in Simpkins Hall 27 and a fiction reading at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 in the WIU Art Gallery, followed by a reception.
Known for his short story collections, which include "The Lives of Rocks" and "The Hermit's Story," Bass has written a number of novels and essays, including his most recent book-length memoir, "Why I Came West," which will be published this summer. Because of his passionate interest in the wilderness issues of North America, he has written non-fiction books, including "The Ninemile Wolves," regarding the reintroduction of the wolf to its native habitat, and "The Lost Grizzlies: A Search for Survivors in the Colorado's Lost Wilderness."
Western Illinois' Fred Ewing and Lola Austin Case Writer-in-Residence Endowment is designed to nurture upcoming writers by providing learning for a lifetime through extended residencies for visiting writers and greater opportunities for more interaction between students and established writers.
