CAS Honors Students, Faculty

MACOMB, IL Western Illinois University's College of Arts and Sciences honored students and faculty at its annual awards reception April 24.

Student Council Honorary Recognition Awards were presented to outstanding seniors in three disciplines. Michelle Standridge, an English major from Winthrop Harbor, was the humanities award recipient; Amy Reed, a biology major from Rushville, was the natural sciences and mathematics award winner; and Marina Skowronski, a psychology major from Frankfort, was the social sciences award winner. Each recipient received a check for $150.

Standridge, who plans to teach English at the high school level and eventually to pursue higher academic degrees, was inducted in Phi Kappa Phi this spring. She has served with the English department's grade appeals committee, is president of the student affiliate of the National Council of Teachers, is a member of the Mathematics Association of America and is a literacy tutor.

Reed, who plans to attend medical school, is a spring 2001 inductee into Phi Kappa Phi. She has received multiple awards and scholarships, including the chairman's award in chemistry, the Paul Nollen Biology Honors Scholarship and an honors council grant for research.

Skowronski, also a spring 2001 Phi Kappa Phi inductee, has been named WIU's arts and sciences College Scholar. She was the University's Lincoln Laureate nominee, has served with the WIU Crisis Hotline and is vice president of the Sigma Lambda Sigma service sorority.

The Student Council organization award was presented to the Social Work Student Association for their high level of student involvement and the quality of their service. Council president Joyce Scala, a senior from Antioch, accepted the award.

Three college professors were named recipients of the annual Outstanding Faculty Awards. They include biology professor Larry Jahn for teaching; sociology and anthropology professor Brendan Maguire for research; and English professor Bruce Leland for service.

Two retiring faculty members were also honored: Larry O'Flaherty, professor and chair of biological sciences with 33 years of service; and John Shockley, a political science professor with 29 years of service.
