International Day of Peace Celebration at WIU Sept. 28

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University will celebrate the International Day of Peace at 5:30 p.m. in the Multicultural Center Monday, Sept. 28. The International Day of Peace, also known as Peace Day, is observed worldwide each year in September. The event is open to the public, and will include refreshments. Students can also earn Purple & Gold Points.
Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.
"We are thrilled this year to collaborate with the Latin American Student Organization, Amplify, the Women's Center and the African Student Association," Professor Julia Albarracin said. "Students have prepared several presentations and activities to highlight areas of the world where we need more peace."
In recent years, the International Day of Peace celebration has been supported by the Rural Postsecondary and Economic Development grant, Addressing Equity Gaps among Rural Students. Feelings of connectedness and shared experiences within a learning community are essential to reducing attrition and motivating learners to persist.
"Many of our retention initiatives focus on our first-year students, but this activity is for third- and fourth-year students as well," WIU Provost Mark Mossman said. "The three most crucial factors in retention and persistence are cultural-social integration, validation, and a sense of belonging."
