WIU Graduate Experience in Museum Studies Takes a Trip to Dubuque, IA
November 3, 2025
MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois Graduate Experience in Museum Studies (GEMS) group embarked on an enriching journey to the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium in Dubuque, IA, where they were treated to an exclusive behind-the-scenes exploration of both living and history collections.
History Curator, Kristin Glomstad-Yoon and Living Collections Curator, Maia Davidson, generously opened doors typically closed to the public, allowing the group to dive deep into the fascinating world of museum operations. From examining preserved historical artifacts to observing the care and management of living specimens, the students had the unique opportunity to see firsthand how distinct collection types are maintained and interpreted.
The visit provided invaluable insights into the complexities of museum curation and reinforced why students are passionate about pursuing careers in this field.
"Our experience was wonderful. We were so appreciative of the curators of the different exhibits taking time to show us the inner workings of the National Mississippi Museum and the day-to-day challenges faced to preserve, present, and maintain the collections," Museum Studies Graduate Student Steve Slade said.
"The GEMS trip to Dubuque and Galena was packed with different activities. The museums we had the opportunity to visit were fantastic, and the special collections tour we got at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium was especially interesting because we were able to see what goes into caring for a living collection as well as a historic collection. It was the perfect time of year to visit, and we even got to experience Galena's large Halloween parade," Museum Studies Graduate Student Anna Greve said.
From 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, the Museum Education Class will have the QC Botanical Mobile Greenhouse in the Riverfront Hall parking lot.
