Museum Studies Partnering with Iowa Museum Association for Professional Development Series

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - The Western Illinois University Museum Studies Program is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with the Iowa Museum Association (IMA) as the official sponsor of the IMA Plugged-In Series, a comprehensive professional development initiative designed to advance museum professionals throughout the region.

"This partnership represents a significant opportunity for our students to engage directly with industry professionals and gain practical insights that complement their academic studies," Heidi Lung, Director of WIU Museum Studies, said. "The virtual format ensures accessibility while building the crucial professional networks our graduates need to succeed in the museum field."

The program will provide WIU Museum Studies graduate students with access to ten specialized professional development sessions throughout the academic year, while simultaneously positioning the university as a committed partner in regional museum education and professional growth. Topics include advocacy and leadership development, collections management, community engagement strategies, museum education, and exhibition planning expertise.

"Our students will gain practical experience in areas that are increasingly critical to museum operations," Lung said. "From disaster preparedness to digital project management, these sessions bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice."

The Museum Studies Graduate Program prepares students for leadership roles in museums, cultural institutions and heritage organizations through comprehensive coursework, hands-on experience, and professional development opportunities.The program emphasizes practical skills, ethical practices and community engagement.
