WIU Scholars Included in "Top 2% Most Influential Scientists" List
September 24, 2025

MACOMB, IL - - Three Western Illinois University scholars have been included in the newly released Stanford/Elsevier "Top 2% Most Influential Scientists" list, which identifies researchers with significant citation impact across disciplines.
"I'm really proud to join my two colleagues in the Biological and Computer Sciences in this designation as among the most influential scientists in the world. I have spent my entire academic career at WIU because of our interconnected missions to provide world-class educational experiences to our students while conducting impactful research. WIU is designated as a Research Institution by the Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education because Professor Lee and myself are among many researchers at WIU who work hard everyday to conduct research that enriches the people of Illinois," WIU Communications Professor Christopher Carpenter said.
The WIU entries on the 2025 list are:
In Lee, School of Computer Sciences
Te-hsiu Ma (deceased, 2015), Department of Biological Sciences
Christopher J. Carpenter, School of Communication and Media
The dataset, compiled annually by Stanford researcher John P. A. Ioannidis and colleagues, provides standardized citation indicators across scientific disciplines. It includes both career-long and single-year (2024) impact metrics based on Scopus data.
The full dataset and documentation, including FAQs, are available through the Elsevier Data Repository: go.wiu.edu/42bxzVQ.
