MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University alumna Melissa Schopfer (Crowe) was awarded the 2025 Women of Plaintiffs Asbestos Litigation Seminar (PALS) Award for her work as a representative for mesothelioma patients and families.

The award, voted on by industry peers, is given to an individual who supports, initiates and/or sustains the advancement and progress of women in the field. It celebrates meaningful leadership on issues related to gender equity and recognizes those who have altered structural barriers to the success of women in the field. Award recipients are those who effectively and consistently speak truth to power.

"I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by incredible and inspiring women who helped and supported me so much throughout my life," Schopfer said. "These women are my mentors and my friends and it is such an honor to receive this award."

Schopfer is a partner and longtime asbestos trial team leader at Simmons Hanly Conroy, a national leader in the legal representation of mesothelioma patients and their families. She has worked on more than 500 cases and recovered more than $100 million in settlements and verdicts on behalf of individuals and families who have been impacted by mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

"Melissa embodies every characteristic and pioneering stride that this award was created to observe," Simmons Hanly Conroy named partner Jayne Conroy said. "We are thrilled to extend our congratulations and join her in celebrating this highly deserved distinction."

Schopfer is a 2002 WIU graduate and former member of the swim team. She credits her time at WIU for building her foundation to have a strong and successful career.

"The bonds and camaraderie I had with my teammates have created lifelong friendships and helped me have the confidence to pursue a career in law and helping others," Schopfer said.
