July 3, 2025

Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.
MACOMB, IL - - Meet Clause Akrong-Nartey, a Western Illinois University Accountancy graduate, who has been hired by Cummins Inc., a company that specializes in diesel and alternative fuel engines and generators.
Akrong-Nartey was hired as a financial analyst. He landed this position through networking opportunities provided by the WIU National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), the student chapter organized for black and other minority students from all business disciplines.
"As a member, I had the opportunity to attend their annual conference in Las Vegas, where I uploaded my resume to the job portal. Shortly after, Cummins reached out for an interview and following the process, I received a job offer," Akrong-Nartey said. "What helped me stand out was my experience in both tax and audit, as well as being on track to earn my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, all backed by a strong academic foundation."
For Akrong-Nartey, attending WIU played a key role in preparing him for a professional career in accounting.
"My time at WIU was transformative," Akrong-Nartey said. "In addition to coursework in accounting, auditing and taxation, I served as the Illinois CPA Society (ICPAS) Student Influencer and Becker CPA Exam Ambassador. These roles connected me to the CPA community and strengthened my career focus, positioning me as a strong candidate and reaffirming my commitment to becoming a licensed CPA."
As a proud alumnus, Akrong-Nartey plans to stay involved with WIU by mentoring other students who want to follow the same career path.
"I look forward to staying involved by mentoring students and contributing to professional events," Akrong-Nartey said. "Inspired by guest speakers during my time at WIU, I hope to give back by sharing my journey through workshops, lectures or panels as I grow in my accounting career."
