Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - When current student Tara Williams thinks of Western Illinois University, she thinks of a time in her life that will always hold a special place in her heart.

"When I think about WIU, I think about all the accomplishments I made and all the wonderful professors and peers I met and interacted with," Williams said. " I feel great and happy, WIU will forever be a part of me."

For Williams, being a Leatherneck not only represents a sense of belonging to WIU but is also a symbol of strength.

"A Leatherneck means the school I belong to, our mascot," Williams said. "To me, it means being tough."

Williams' favorite Leatherneck memory is the guidance she received from her mathematics professor.

"Meeting with my professor, Mrs. Felt, is my favorite memory," Williams said. "She taught me math all over and it was fun and interesting. I felt like I was in fourth grade, eager to learn something new."

As a student, William feels that WIU is preparing her to succeed in a teaching career.

"WIU put me on a path for greatness and unlimited opportunities," Williams said.

To prospective students, William's advice is to stay curious and be brave.

"Communicate and stay open to new ideas," Williams said. "Don't be afraid to take the risk and fly."

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
