MACOMB, IL - - For Zaki Faisal, political science graduate student, Western Illinois University is characterized by its welcoming community—one that inspires growth and makes you feel at home.
"When I think about WIU, I think of a welcoming community that helped me grow personally and academically," Faisal said. "It has been an honor and I'm proud to be part of WIU's 125-year legacy."
Faisal describes Leathernecks as individuals with a sense of commitment, not only to excellence, but to being resilient in the face of adversity and becoming a supportive and impactful member of the community.
"To me, a Leatherneck represents resilience, pride and a commitment to excellence," Faisal said. "It means standing strong in the face of challenges, supporting others and always striving to make a positive impact—both on campus and beyond."
Among his Leatherneck memories, Faisal's favorite is becoming an International Ambassador.
"Being selected as an International Ambassador stands out as my favorite Leatherneck memory," Faisal said. "It was a proud moment that made me feel recognized, valued and truly part of the Leatherneck family."
On campus, Faisal serves as a graduate teaching assistant in the Political Science Department and is an active member of the badminton club, Bangladeshi Student Association, University Union Board and Wesley Foundation.
To prospective students, Faisal's advice highlights the sense of community at WIU, the diverse opportunities to support student success and its commitment to creating a place where everyone feels welcome.
"WIU is a welcoming and student-centered institution that truly cares about your success," Faisal said. "The campus community is close-knit and faculty go above and beyond to support and guide students. With generous scholarships, leadership opportunities and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, WIU creates an environment where you can grow academically, personally and professionally. It's a place where your voice matters and your potential is recognized."
