MACOMB, IL - - Current student and secretary of the Board of Trustees Cody Cornell describes WIU as a place that prepares students to make a meaningful impact by fostering leadership, growth and community engagement.
"From the moment I toured the campus with my dad, I felt at home," Cornell said. "WIU isn't just a place to receive an education—it's a place where relationships are built, both with peers and faculty. It's a university that encourages leadership, growth and community engagement. WIU is where I've learned the importance of service, leadership and working together to make a difference and it's where I know I will continue to build the foundation for my future."
Cornell assures that being a Leatherneck means being committed to excellence. Leathernecks are prepared to become leaders who strive for growth and are dedicated to positively influencing the community.
"To me, being a Leatherneck means embodying a strong sense of pride, resilience and determination. It represents a commitment to excellence both in and outside of the classroom. As a Leatherneck, I am part of a legacy of individuals who are not only dedicated to their academic success but also to making a positive impact in the community. It's about upholding the values of leadership, service and integrity—values that have guided me through my time at Western Illinois University. A Leatherneck isn't just a student; is someone who leads by example, supports their peers, and works tirelessly to better the world around them," Cornell said.
One of Cornell's favorite Leatherneck memories is the opportunity to speak at the WIU Donor Banquet, where he was honored to share his story and show how the generosity of the donors has made a difference in the lives of many students.
"I spoke about how scholarships have allowed me to thrive both academically and personally, giving me the chance to lead on campus, advocate for my peers as a member of the Board of Trustees and pursue my passion for agriculture and law. It was a moment that highlighted not only the impact on the WIU community but also the responsibility I feel to give back in the future. That evening, I was reminded of what it truly means to be a Leatherneck: to be part of something greater than yourself and to make a lasting difference in the lives of others," Cornell said.
Dedicated to representing the essence of a Leatherneck Cornell is actively involved on campus. Aside from being the secretary of the WIU Board of Trustees, he is an active member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, where he currently serves on the fraternity's National Collegiate Advisory Council and previously served as the Noble Regent (President). During his time at WIU, Cornell has also served on the AgVocators team, the Academic Calendar Committee and the St. Francis Catholic Newman Center.
To the prospective students, Cornell's advice is to take the chance to attend WIU, explore all that it has to offer and be part of a supportive community.
"WIU offers a wide range of opportunities to connect with like-minded peers, engage in leadership roles and make a real impact on campus and in the community. Whether it's through academic organizations, student government, or fraternities and sororities, there's a place for everyone to contribute and grow. At WIU, you're more than just a student—you're part of a supportive community that encourages growth and fosters leadership. So, take the chance to explore, get involved, and make the most of your time here," Cornell said.
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
