WIU Celebrates Black History Month with Multiple Events

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Multicultural Center (MCC) and the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center (GBCC) will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events held throughout February.
The MCC will spend the month celebrating Black history and culture, recognizing the profound impact of African Americans on society.
"Our goal this year was to highlight excellence and honor the past," MCC Associate Director LeRon Williams said. "WIU has had an immense impact on the students that have attended the school for a long time. I believe it is our duty to honor and let them know that we see you and we thank you for trailblazing a path for us to follow."
The following events will be held at the MCC to celebrate Black History Month:
Saturday, Feb. 1, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. - Black Excellence Brunch
Kick off Black History Month with a celebratory brunch hosted by the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center (GBCC) and the Black Student Association (BSA). This event honors the achievements of Black students and pays tribute to the legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks, an icon in literature and cultural activism. WIU alum Robert Haley will be recognized for his contributions to student success.
Monday, Feb. 3, 4-6 p.m. - "What Happens Now?"
This interactive panel hosted by the BSA will address how elections directly impact college students, especially within the African American community.
Wednesday, Feb. 19, 5-7 p.m. - Film Screening
Join the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center and Veterans Resource Center for a movie screening. The event includes a panel discussion with military-affiliated graduates, offering insights into their experiences and the resilience of Black service members.
Friday, Feb. 21, 7-9 p.m. - Barbershop Talk
Young Black men will gather for an evening of solidarity and brotherhood. This safe space will encourage vulnerability and personal growth while providing an opportunity to connect with trusted barbers.
Thursday, Feb. 27, 5-8 p.m. - Taste of Africa and the Caribbean
Experience the rich flavors, vibrant cultures and dynamic traditions of African and Caribbean countries. This immersive event hosted by the African Student Association and Student Organization of Caribbean Ancestry allows participants to engage with the beauty of the African diaspora through food, music and storytelling.
The BSA will also hold two workshops monthly: "Internalizing and Shaping Leadership" on Monday, Feb. 17, and "Breaking the Cycle" on Monday, Feb. 24. Both workshops will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the MCC.
Additional events will occur throughout February, including an open mic night, roller skate evening and a GBCC Ball. These events celebrate Black culture through fun and fellowship, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy.
