Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - Avery Gullidge came to Western Illinois University not knowing exactly what she wanted to major in. The people at WIU helped Gullidge find her path.

"WIU has something for everyone," Gullidge said. "Being Undecided when I first entered college was intimidating, but you can discover your interests and work towards your future!"

Gullidge, a junior majoring in speech pathology and audiology, said professors, staff and fellow students have been very supportive in helping her on her academic journey.

"I think of a great community who is there to help you when you need it," Gullidge said. "For me, WIU is like a second home where I have found new friends and created long-lasting relationships with those around me."

The WIU Speech-Language Hearing Association (WIUSSLHA) is one of the multiple groups Gullidge has been a part of, giving her opportunities to hold leadership positions and gain experience at volunteer events.

These experiences have shown Gullidge exactly what being a Leatherneck means.

"A Leatherneck is a strong-willed, hard-working individual who empowers and inspires others, someone who is a positive role model, ready to be the best they can be," Gullidge said.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series by filling out this form, or contacting University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
