Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Current Social Work student, ToniSue Chatfield, chose WIU because of the safe community and the opportunity to serve.

"A safe space that allows me to learn how to serve and help others through my program, Social Work, which allows me to feel welcome," Chatfield said.

To Chatfield, being a Leatherneck means being a part of a large family of support.

"Being a Leatherneck to me means being a part of a large family that will always support you. It is an honor to be a Leatherneck and to have the opportunity to learn from such supportive and caring faculty members who have the best interest in mind for us students and who have helped me become the best version of myself," Chatfield said.

Her favorite memory at WIU so far is presenting to high schools and professionals during wellness days within the WIU Social Work program.

"I have also enjoyed having the opportunity to be the social media coordinator at WIU Horn Field Campus and being involved in all that we do," Chatfield said.

Chatfield stays involved on campus as Student Social Media Coordinator at Horn Field Campus, Student Leader in the Social Work Student Diversity Council, The National Association of Social Workers in Illinois Student Liaison for Western Illinois University, Social Work Peer Mentor, Past secretary of the Social Work Student Association, Member of Phi Alpha honor society, Member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Chatfield advises students to take the next step!

"WIU is such a supportive community, there are so many opportunities to grow and become involved on and off campus. You will find your place in the world right here in Macomb," Chatfield said.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
