WIU Women's Center Raises Funds for WIRC

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Women's Center donated $1,086 to the Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC) Victim Services through the Take Back the Night March held in late September.

The march was held to increase awareness of and seek an end to sexual assault, dating, domestic violence, stalking and other forms of sexual and power-based interpersonal violence and to remember and honor victims and survivors. Erbenita Zejnul and Patience Thomas, graduate assistants from the WIU Women's Center, said the event was a success.

"It was such an incredible experience to help organize Take Back the Night," Zejnul said. "We're deeply grateful to everyone who supported us behind the scenes and to all those who attended to stand with survivors.

Seeing everyone in attendance made for a memorable event.

"Your presence and solidarity made this event truly unforgettable." Thomas said.

WIRC Victim Services' Program Director Collins said abuse could happen to individuals of all ages, religions, ethnic backgrounds, income levels, educational backgrounds, genders and sexual orientations. As part of their mission, they are dedicated to providing free and confidential services in a safe and welcoming environment.

"All of the donations raised during the Take Back the Night event will go directly toward assisting survivors on their healing journey," Collins said. "These funds will support essential services such as emergency gas cards, shelter, and food assistance, all provided through our case management program."
