Excellence in Diversity Reception May 9

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's 24th annual Excellence in Diversity Awards Reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, May 9 in the University Union Heritage Room on the WIU-Macomb campus.

Nominees will be recognized for excellence in leadership, education and service, and one individual will receive the 2013 Cathy O'Neill Couza Award for Outstanding Leadership in Diversity. In addition, the Dupuis Leadership Award in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Communities and the Dupuis Leadership Award in Historically Underrepresented Communities will be awarded. Erik Brooks, chair of WIU's Department of African American Studies, will be this year's featured speaker.

The awards, which are presented by President Jack Thomas, are designed to celebrate diversity and multicultural leadership efforts that have advanced Western's Strategic Plan, "Higher Values in Higher Education," increased diversity and created a campus climate that welcomes and supports all individuals.

The 2013 nominees include (winners will be announced at the reception):

Excellence in Education: Tracy Davis, professor, College Student Personnel; Pearlie Strother-Adams, professor, English and journalism; Sean Dixon, Interpersonal Violence Prevention coordinator, Women's Center; and UNITY, the campus' LGBTQA student organization.

Excellence in Leadership: Richard Carter, executive director, School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach; Sean Dixon, Interpersonal Violence Prevention coordinator, Women's Center; and Jonathan Curry, a freshman family consumer sciences major.

Excellence in Service: Mohammad Siddiqi, professor, English and journalism; Sean Dixon, Interpersonal Violence Prevention coordinator, Women's Center; UNITY, a campus LGBTQA student organization; and Kathy Meyers, assistant director, Veterans Resource Center.
