MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Libraries, the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center and the Department of English and Journalism are sponsoring a poetry reading celebrating African American poetry from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 in the Multicultural Center. The event is open free to the public.

Students, as well as faculty and staff members, will read poetry—either their own poems or those by African American poets—during the event. According to Bill Thompson of University Libraries and coordinator of the event, last year the event featured a variety of students and faculty who participated, often reading their own material.

"It's a great way to celebrate Black History Month by promoting both the work of classic American poets and the local poets being fostered at Western," he added.
