Registration Information

How to Apply, Register, Get the Book, and Gain On-Line Access

I. Applying to Western Illinois University

Fill out an application to graduate school

• on-line www.wiu.edu/grad/  (No advance PIN is needed, use the Create Account button)
• or call Graduate Office 309/298-1806.

If you are pursuing a graduate degree, you will need to have your official transcripts mailed to the Graduate School.
If you are not pursuing a graduate degree, you only need to provide proof of your highest degree (by having the registrar mail a letter).

You will get a letter of confirmation from the Graduate School (which will also indicate the first day you may register).

(If you have recently received a degree from Western, you will need to re-apply. If you are not sure if you are eligible to apply, you may a) just try to register--the computer will tell you if you can't; b) call the Graduate Office; c) call me.)

II. Registering For Classes

To register for this course
1.  E-mail (jr-olsen@wiu.edu)* me with your WIU ID number (or social security number) and tell me a little bit about yourself and briefly describe why you want to take the course, so that I can "load the permission."  The prerequisite for the course is "permission of instructor" (permission is easy to obtain!).  Our department assistant chairperson will attempt to register you.  That should take care of it.

2. Check on the STARS (www.student.services.wiu.edu/STARS) system after about a week to verify that you are registered.

If you run into any snags,

After you have registered, stay in e-mail contact with me (watch your e-mail for new information about the course and startup).

*Please be sure that you've done step I first. Make sure you've applied to WIU and been accepted before you ask permission to get into the class. Our department assistant chairperson cannot load the permission into the computer and enroll you unless you are accepted as a WIU student. This can reduce problems. Feel free to e-mail me anytime with questions or to express interest, but make sure you are accepted as a WIU student before formally asking for permission into the course.

III. To Get the Textbook for the Course

To get the textbook,

• Call the WIU Bookstore toll-free, 800-338-6369.
• or, fax the WIU Bookstore: 309-298-2931.

IV. Gaining On-Line Access

I will be using a program called WebCT to put up the course. This is where most of our work (on-line discussions, homework submissions, exams, etc.) will take place (in a password protected environment). Once you have registered for the course you use your WIU ECOM username and password (same password for all WebCT courses) to get into the course web site. Click here to find out about your WIU ECOM username and password and activating your account (it's not hard). To gain access to WebCT, it is best to return to Jim Olsen's Homepage (http://www.wiu.edu/users/mfjro1/wiu/index.htm), because the version of WebCT that is in use is frequently update.
