Math 656 Advanced Perspective of Topics from Secondary School Mathematics

Course Description

An advanced study of the topics from the secondary school mathematics curriculum for developing deeper connection and representations for all students. Focus is on rigorous conceptual context knowledge, methods of inquiry, and investigative problem-solving. Topics include Algebra, Statistics, Geometry*, and Calculus*. (3, repeatable to 6) Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor.

Course Information

Course title: Advanced Perspective of Topics from Secondary School Mathematics

Day/Time: This is an online course. There will be synchronous online class sessions. Synchronous class meetings will be Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 8:30-9:45 am. These class meetings will be done via Zoom. Students do not come to campus.  All class work is done remotely/online. (The class will not meet on July 4.)
Dates: This is an 8-week summer course. The course begins June 6, 2022 and ends July 29, 2022.
Location: Online using WesternOnline https://westernonline.wiu.edu/ (Log in with your ecom username and password.)
Credit hours: 3 SH
Intended audiences:  This course is intended for high school math teachers in the MSTM (Master of Science in Teaching Mathematics) program at WIU. In addition, other graduate students, who are interested in gaining an advanced perspective of high school geometry and calculus, may want to enroll.
To Enroll: If you'd like to enroll in this course email me (Jim Olsen, JR-Olsen@wiu.edu) and provide your W.I.U. ID number.
Textbook: I recommend you have a print high school Geometry textbook and a Calculus textbook available to you. We will use the following open-source online textbooks:

Graduate Program

The Department of Mathematics and Philosophy now has two masters degree programs. Math 656 is a course in the Masters of Science in Teaching Mathematics (MSTM). This degree is designed for current teachers of secondary mathematics and the courses are offered in an online format. This innovative program gives teachers an opportunity to earn a Masters degree in Mathematics and provide opportunities for these teachers to teach dual credit and college-level courses.
