 - Time: 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
 - Location: COFAC Recital Hall
 - Description:
MACOMB, IL — Western Illinois University will present Keep Stats, Not Grades: A Positive Revolution in Classroom Assessment, an innovative presentation by David R. Getz, music conductor, personal creative consultant and author of Unlocking Student Creativity through Composition. The event will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 at the COFAC Recital Hall, 1020 Simpkins Cir, Macomb, IL 61455.
This session, hosted through WIU, invites educators to challenge traditional grading systems and explore how statistics-based assessment can transform performance-based classrooms. Rather than focusing solely on letter grades, Getz demonstrates how tools such as Google Sheets and Google Forms can be used to track, analyze and visualize student progress in ways that are both pedagogically meaningful and creatively engaging.
Through thought-provoking discussions and practical classroom examples, participants will learn how to implement alternative assessment methods that highlight student growth, identify areas for improvement and support instructional strategies. By emphasizing statistics that matter, Getz shows how educators can create a supportive, growth-oriented learning environment that reflects a comprehensive understanding of student abilities.
Getz, an accomplished educator and musician, serves as Orchestra Director at Morton High School and is the Founder/Director of The Composers' Guild. He is also the composer of Ruth: The Musical and conductor of the Central Illinois Youth Symphony. His work exemplifies WIU's commitment to advancing innovative teaching practices that benefit both educators and students.
