WIU Professor to Give Campus Update from COP 30
November 12, 2025
MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University English Professor Everett Hamner is attending the 30th annual United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference (COP 30) in Brazil and will bring his first-hand account to the campus community next week.
From 4:15-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, Hamner will be featured in a panel discussion of everything occurring at COP 30 in the University Union Capitol Room. WIU Anthropology Professor Heather McIlvaine-Newsad, WIU Soil Science and Sustainable Ag Professor Joel Gruver and WIU Associate Professor of Public Health Maureen Bezold will also be providing commentary. Hamner will join via Zoom from the conference. WIU Professor of Religious Studies Amy Carr will moderate the discussion.
COP30 is the annual global climate conference that is working to apply and expand the Paris Agreement's commitments. Hamner will provide some thoughts on where things stand with climate destruction, why people should care about this and about what he's experienced to that point in Brazil. The panel will then discuss their own thoughts and help connect global climate action to food and public health issues in Macomb and the region.
A reception will be held following the discussion in the Brattain Lounge with refreshments.
