University Libraries Celebrates Open Access Week with Panel Discussion

University Libraries will celebrate Open Access Week with a panel discussion on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 3 p.m. in the Leslie F. Malpass Library, Fourth Floor West. The panelists include Melanie Hetzel-Riggin, Associate Professor in Psychology, Susan Romano, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, Kathy Barclay, Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, and Linda Zellmer, Associate Professor in the WIU Libraries. The panelists will discuss developing ideas for research, how to select a publication venue, open access and predatory journals.

According to Linda Zellmer, "Open Access Week is an opportunity for us to continue the discussion of the benefits of publishing our research in an open access journal. We want to eliminate some myths, and encourage departments to consider accepting certain open access journals as scholarly publications." Zellmer has created a guide on scholarly publishing and open access that provides a wealth of information and resources. Open Access Week, October 22 – 28, 2012, is a global event that is being held to inform faculty, students and the general public, about the benefits of Open Access and encourage faculty and students to accept and contribute towards the development of a new model of scholarly publication, one that allows all users to access, use and benefit from scholarship and research.
