2006 Graham Scholarships Awarded

Western Illinois University Libraries has announced the recipients of the William H. and Eva Little Graham Libraries' Student Assistant Scholarship.

Lindsay Battles, a senior elementary education major from Colchester (IL), is a student assistant in the acquisitions unit in the Leslie F. Malpass Library.

"Working in the library has provided many opportunities for me to develop skills that I can use throughout my life," Battles said. "Being awarded the Graham Scholarship is a wonderful honor. It's a great feeling to know that my job as a student assistant is helping me achieve my educational goals. Receiving this scholarship further proves that the library community is truly concerned with students' education."

A senior biology major from Griggsville (IL), Keesa Stinebacker is a student assistant in the Physical Sciences Library in Currens Hall.

"Working at the Physical Sciences Library has been a great experience. I enjoy being able to apply my knowledge of chemistry and biology toward helping answer questions that patrons might have," Stinebacker said. "Receiving the Graham Scholarship is a great honor, and to me it represents the accomplishments I've achieved while working at the library."

The Graham Scholarship was established through a bequest from Louis and Maxine Graham Haertle. According to Charles Malone, University Libraries interim dean, Mr. Haertle was a generous donor to the University Libraries, contributing money for the purchase of books and artwork in memory of his wife. The scholarship is named after Maxine's parents, William H. and Eva Little Graham.

"The Graham family has a long association with Western Illinois University. Eva Little Graham was a student in 1903-04, and many of her children and grandchildren attended Western and her daughter, Peggy Graham Zinga, was employed in the University Libraries for 16 years," said Malone. "The Graham Libraries' Student Assistant Scholarship provides two worthy students with a $500 tuition grant and offers an annual opportunity for acknowledging the generosity of the Haertle and Graham families to WIU and the University Libraries."
