Birger Vanwesenbeeck, Spring 2017 Magliocco Lecture
"Huizinga, Theorist of Late Style?"
March 7th, 2017, 7:00-9:00 pm, Morgan 109
This year's Magliocco Lecture will be Dr. Birger Vanwesenbeeck. Rather than focusing on cutting-edges or avant-gardes, Dr. Vanwesenbeek will address the question of being late and late style in literature and art. His lecture will juxtapose Edward Said’s and Theodor Adorno’s concept of late style to the work of an early twentieth-century thinker that is yet to be given a place within the contemporary debate on lateness: The Waning of the Middle Ages by the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga. Published 1919, Huizinga’s study constitutes arguably one of the first extensive accounts of lateness in art history. This year's lecture is being organized by Dr. David Banash
