- July 6th David O Russel's Three Kings
( 1999) In the immediate aftermath of the
1991 Gulf War, things go badly awry when three soldiers plot to steal a cache
of gold they believe to be hidden near their base. On their way to the gold,
the soldiers meet a group of refugees in need of help. Chaos, tragedy, heroism
ensue--though not necessarily in that order. Certainly the best film
about the 1991 Gulf War and arguably the best American film about war since
Apocolypse Now. Responding: Charles Helm of the WIU Political Science Department.
- July 13th Michael Ritchie's The Candidate (1972) Robert Redford stars as a charismatic underdog candidate
for Senator from California. As his political fortunes gradually improve, he
finds he must choose between compromising his principles or possibly losing
the election. This
classic film features cameos by politicians of the day including George
McGovern, Hubert Humphrey, and Alan Cranston. Responding: Jana Dietz of the WIU Political Science Department.
- July 27th, Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker's The
War Room (1993) This acclaimed documentary provides a backstage look at Bill Clinton's
journey from unknown candidate to becoming the 42nd president of the United States.
Responding: David Connelly of the WIU Political Science
Department
Directions to the Sandburg Theater: The Sandburg Theater is located in
the Student Union's lowest level, i.e. the same floor that houses the bowling
alley. The easiest way to get to the Sandburg Theater is to park in one of
the lots close to the Student Union and then walk behind the Student Union to
