ERIC Numbers and ERIC Documents

Every ERIC record is assigned a unique ERIC Number. This one's is EJ625194. People commonly use ERIC Numbers as a means of quickly separating journal articles or book chapters from ERIC Documents--about which more below. All ERIC Numbers for journal articles begin with an EJ. All numbers for ERIC Documents begin with an ED. By glancing at an article's ERIC Number it is possible to quickly discriminate between journal articles and ERIC Documents. Depending on the "flavor" of ERIC you are using, it is often possible to sort records by their ERIC Numbers, allowing you to view only the ERIC journal articles or the ERIC Documents. This is convenient if a faculty member does not allow the use of ERIC Documents in a paper.

About ERIC Documents

ERIC Documents consist of printed matter relating to education that do not appear in journals. Because ERIC Documents are not subjected to the kind of peer review that journal articles are, teachers (particularly in graduate programs) sometimes refuse to allow students to use ERIC Documents in their papers. This explains why students sometimes delete all ERIC Documents from a search. On the other hand, ERIC Documents often contain information that it would be difficult to locate anywhere else. Moreover, many ERIC Documents are available in full text right from the database.
