Easter in Jerusalem
Easter - celebrates the resurrection of Jesus (also presupposes the death of Jesus)
Jerusalem - site of Jesus' crucifixion; is symbolically significant to Jews because it's also the site of the Temple of Solomon (central worship and sacrifice took place in the Temple of Solomon before the structure was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE)
Disciple - follower of Jesus (past or present)
Apostle - twelve at the Last Supper (male) [Possibly symbolic of the twelve Tribes of Israel]
Gentiles - "non Jewish"
Liturgy - order of worship
Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit (God is three in one)
Denomination - particular form of Christianity (the three main denominations are Roman Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Protestantism)
~Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy feature ancient liturgies
~There are many forms of Orthodoxy, for example, Armenian, Greek, Serbian, Ethiopian, and Russian
~Protestantism is relatively new (formed in the 16th century)
Features of the Main Denominations
Greek Orthodox: Holy Saturday, fire to symbolize the victory of Jesus, only men can be worship leaders and they must be married before becoming ordained not many crosses are present in the churches, and images of Jesus are depicted as triumphant
Roman Catholic: stations of the cross, celebration of Good Friday (the day that Jesus died/died on Friday, resurrected on Sunday), churches present many crucifixes.
Protestants: NOT COVERED IN CLASS IN IT'S ENTIRETY (we broke into groups before doing a chart of the Protestants)
