Comments: The students will have an assignment on operational definitions.  They will need to find data to suitable for measuring some variable of interest.  I am hoping that a librarian might review some statistical sources of interest: ASR; Statistical Universe; STAT ABS and World Bank sources.  I would defer to a librarian on which sources would be covered.  I will send a copy of the assignment to Bill.  I am also hoping that this session will take no more than half a class. Comments: Fact checking of accuracy in historical fiction, specifically for this paper, of facts from Neal Stephenson\'s Cryptonomicon.  Some possible facts students might be interested in include: * the occurence of leprosy in the Philippines in WWII or the appearance of a person with leprosy; * the battle at Guadalcanal, personal reminiscence or a contemporary account (or both); * deep sea diving and the bends - how to go down and how to come back up; did the Japanese bury gold bars in booby-trapped tunnels in the Philippines at the end of WWII? * did the GErmans have a new model submarine (perhaps as many as 10 of them completed) at the end of WWII that never got to see service?  Was there a German code called Althusa that never got broken?I\'m trying to give you a lot of options.  I think it would be great if you could include a contemporary account of Guadalcanal (or Pearl Harbor or Doolittle\'s bombing of Japan or MacArthur\'s liberation of Manilla), especially from the NY Times or Washinton Post - something they would need to use paper index and obscure machines (microfilm readers) to get to.I have a page with links to sites with some info relevant to the info in the book at http:www.wiu.eduusersmfwllinks450G.htmThanks.  Joan

Comments: My freshman students need a general overview of the library and resources available. None of them have toured the library. Specifically, this visit should focus on locating periodicals and how to search Academic Search Elite, InfoTrac, and WilsonSelect. Alternative Dates: 101; 103; 108; 1010; 1012.
