Sensational Science Circus

Department of Physics / Department of Chemistry

There is a new, exciting opportunity for science teachers and students in area K-12 schools. We have recently initiated a community outreach program aimed at enhancing attitudes toward science and increasing science literacy among K-12 students. Our program is a joint collaboration between the Departments of Physics and Chemistry funded by the Illinois State Board of Education. During this first year of our three-year program, WIU Chemistry and Physics faculty members will supervise undergraduate science students in the presentation of a variety of demonstrations aimed at stimulating curiosity, excitement and interest in science and in scientists.

Many of the demonstrations will include hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for students of all ages. Demonstrations can be suited to a particular topic of interest or current study in the physical sciences, and all demonstrations will be presented in an entertaining format. Visitations begin in January 2000.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

-K-12 science students gain experience and knowledge with a variety of instrumentation/equipment/experiments not widely available in most public school districts.

-Programs can be designed to reinforce lessons from the classroom.

-Undergraduate students serve as mentors and role models for K-12 students, stimulating interest and excitement for the study of the physical sciences.
