These instructions will show you how to use the Integrated Development Environment (IDE). It allows you to compile, run and debug your programs without ever leaving the IDE. That is, once you start up the IDE, you will be able to do everything you need to without ever seeing the DOS prompt or issuing text commands--until it is time to logout. We invoke the Integrated Development Environment by typing tp6
1. Now type "TP6" which will bring up the integrated Turbo Pascal
environment.
2. Press the "F3" key. The Fn keys will either be on the left
side of your keyboard or on top.
You should see a menu that says "Open a FIle" pop up.
3. Type the name of your program in the place marked "Name"
Press the carriage return key. This will be either a new name
if you are starting a new program or a name that already
exists if you are editing a program you have worked on
previously. The computer will assume that your program ends
with ".PAS" as the extension if you don't specify one. That's
OK for now as we are creating a PASCAL program which must end
with a ".PAS" extension.
4. Type in your program. You can edit by using the arrow keys to
move the cursor around. We can find these on the right.
5. Press the CTRL and F9 keys simultaneously.
(If you have any "syntax errors," the machine will flash
something at you in red and you can then go back to step 10 to
fix the problem.)
6. The program will sit there waiting for input data--unless you
wrote a program that just reads from an input file.
7. The system will go back to the editing screen before you have
an opportunity to see the last or only thing your program
printed out on the screen. Press ALT and the F5 key
simultaneously to see all your input and output.
8. When you are finished looking at your results, press ALT and
F5 to get back to the screen with your program on it.
9. If your program didn't work, go back to step 5 and rectify the
situation.
If it did work, but you want to try different data, go back to
step 6.
10. If you wish to print the PASCAL program,
Press the ALT and F keys simultaneously
When you see the pop-up menu, press the P key.
11. When you are finished, press the F2 key.
12. Press Alt and X to Leave Turbo Pascal and get back to DOS
prompt.
13. Don't forget to "LOGOUT"
