INTRODUCTION
BALL Semiconductor Inc. (BSI) is creating a process in which 1 mm silicon spheres
will be used to replace silicon chips as computer processors. The current trend in
processors is to create larger chips with more functionality. However, to increase
the size of the chips, larger wafers would be needed, requiring new technology and
facilities estimated to cost more than $21 billion, a price that no single company
could afford. BSI is attempting to create smaller, higher quality processors that
are less expensive and faster to produce.
