My research interests are varied, covering issues in cartography, urban geography, transportation geography, and cultural geography.

BOOKS

As author. Following the retirement of John Allen, I assumed authorship of the popular Student Atlas titles. After serving as a consulting editor for the sixth edition of Student Atlas of World Geography, the transition in authorship began with the with the ninth edition of the Student Atlas of World Politics.

Various Maps for WIU Clients

3D Map of the Moses King Brink and Tile Works National Historic District.

This project used ArcMap and Google SketchUp to reconstruct the Moses King Brink and Tile Works. "The Brickyard" as it is known, is located in Colchester, Illinois and is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

3D Map of Vishnu Springs.

This project used GIS, GPS & 3D Modeling in Google SketchUp to reconstruct the ghost town of Vishnu Springs, IL. Vishnu Springs developed in the late 1800s as a health resort with a natural artesian spring that was purported to have “healing powers.” The town was surveyed and platted in the summer of 1889 and that year saw construction of the Capitol Hotel. Although more than twenty buildings were constructed in the town, the site was abandoned by 1905. In the early 1930s, all buildings in the town were demolished with the exception of the Capitol Hotel. After a brief period during the 1970s when the hotel was rented as housing, the property was abandoned in 1980. In 2002, the site was donated to Western Illinois University as the Ira and Reatha T. Post Wildlife Sanctuary.

Macomb Courthouse Square.3D Map of the Macomb Courthouse Square. See the web page (under construction).

This project involves integrating GIS, GPS, 3D modeling, and graphic design software to produce a map of the Courthouse Square in Macomb, Illinois where the buildings are simulated 3-dimensional representations. This project included several undergraduate and graduate students, each of whom was assigned a block. Footprints were created in ArcGIS and exported to Sketchup, which then was used to create the "virtual" 3D representations of the buildings.

campus_sm 3D Map of the Western Illinois University Campus.

This project involves integrating GIS, CAD, 3D modeling, and graphic design software to produce a map of the WIU campus where the buildings are simulated 3-dimensional representations. The process includes using digital CAD drawings and ArcGIS to construct multiple components of the map (building footprints, block and parking lot outlines, etc.) which are then exported to SketchUp. Sketchup is then used to create the "virtual" 3D representations of the buildings. In this the project, the map extent will be treated as a flat surface which, given the elevation change between the north and south ends of the campus, will introduce some error in the final rendering.
