Group Work Four: Oppositions & definitions

In the first four chapters of The Language of New Media, Manovich has established numerous oppositions—tensions between concepts which are established in “old media” and new ways of thinking emerging in new media.

Working with another student (see below), prepare a web page which names and then describes one of these oppositions in as much detail as possible. You will have the entire class period Monday, April 5, to do this work.

In class, we will keep record of the oppositions folks have selected. Repetition won't be permitted—every group will have to find their own unique concept to work on. (So if you start over the weekend, “claim” your content on the class list.)

As with the previous group assignment:

  1. Use the specialized vocabulary Manovich develops in The Language of New Media.
  2. I've provided a MOO location for each pair of students so that if you plan to meet in the MOO, you'll be by yourselves. Just type "walk to open water" or whatever the location is that I've set out here. (Of course, you can meet wherever you like; these are just suggestions.)
  3. Prepare a web page which contains your completed assignment. Post it online, and post the address for the page to the class list by the end of class Monday, April 5.
