ENG 500, Fall 2008
Most of these belong to me, written for work at WIU or in similar contexts. All links are PDFs. For now, only the forms represented in the portfolio are included here; examples of my scholarship are on my writings page.
- Abstract or proposal for a conference or essay
- “Teaching standards in technical communication programs,” written for the Council of Programs in Scientific & Technical Communication 2008. Here’s the original CFP. The conference is unique: presentations are very short with the emphasis on discussion. In my proposal, I tried to show a theoretical richness while including clues which show my awareness of the strict rules about presentation times.
- Award application
- “Provost’s Awards of Excellence: Teaching with Technology.” Written to these award criteria. I used subheads to organize the document, so readers would quickly see my qualifications. Because I had heard past readers were overwhelmed by long applications, I kept it brief.
- Biographies
- Drafted. Note that I have created several versions for different contexts.
- Cover letter
- I currently have an edited collection under review with an academic press. Here’s the cover letter I wrote to accompany the proposal my co-editor and I submitted. In this case, one purpose was to include information we thought was not appropriate for the proposal (the mention of the review with another press).
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- I frequently update my vita (so I won’t forget things I do). Sometime this semester I plan to completely redo it, as the categories I’ve used since I began my job at Western are stretching a bit.
- Lesson plans
- The detailed schedule is a good example. I sometimes supplement it with some reading notes or excerpts.
- Résumé
- to do
- Statement of purpose
- In April 2008 I applied for an administrative internship which would earn me a 50% reassigned time. This statement of purpose outlines what I envisioned for the internship, its importance, and its relevance to the award criteria.
- Syllabus
- Find quite a few on my teaching page.
- Teaching philosophy
- to do
