Week 15: User testing

More on user testing, using our nearly completed projects and readings we've already completed. I will post a specific prompt 11/28.

Bradley will not be in class Mon Dec 3. Come to class to do course evaluations, get help from others, and to help those you can.

Week 16: Examinations

Our essay examination will be Monday, December 10 at 6:00pm in our regular classroom. You will be permitted to use the computers to complete the exam.

Weeks 1 & 2: Standards

Week one (8/20 & 8/22): course introduction. Get software; get on class weblog; get Google reader. Discuss project assignment. Read introductory standards material and discuss on weblog. Readings.

Week two (8/27 & 8/29): Read second round of standards material and discuss in class and in weblog. Get access to ECOM server. Learn framework for web publishing (network, remote, etc). Readings.

Weeks 3 & 4: Code

Week three (9/05): No class Mon 9/03. Start learning coding in general and XHTML in specific. Learn validation loop. Make some web pages! Readings.

Week four (9/10 & 9/12): more on XHTML. Content/presentation separation. Lots of work in studio time. Readings.

Weeks 5 & 6: Style

Week five (9/17 & 9/19): Learn how styles function. Use styles in word processor documents. Begin learning CSS. Readings.

Week six (9/24 & 9/26): Continue learning CSS. Use style to make web pages pretty. Evaluations for weblog, class participation, and experiments. Readings.

Weeks 7 & 8: Interface

Week 7 (10/01 & 10/03): Prospectus due!

Thinking about individual web pages: first interface design (Mon), then page design (Weds). Discuss principles of design outlined by Horton & Lynch. What are the ramifications for your project? (Readings for week seven.)

Week 8 (10/08 & 10/11): Thinking about whole web sites: how to organize a site; common types of sites; building blocks you can use. Consider what’s relevant for your project. From the Web 2.0 article, make sure you understand what Web 2.0 is, and the 15 top-level items; many we’ve already discussed. (Readings for week eight.)

Week 9: Accessibility

(10/15 and 10/17.) Learn basics of accessibility from Zeldman (Mon). Use FAE to evaluate a site. How can you improve it? (Weds). Readings for week nine.

Weeks 10 & 11: Usability

Project rough draft due 10/22!

Week 10: Compare both articles Monday; get a handle on usability basics. Wednesday, some activity to evaluate the usability of web sites. Readings.

Week 11: Develop testing protcols Monday. Testing on Wednesday. We’ll use a common site and our own sites too. Readings.
