Physics independent study  -  Advanced Optics - Spring 2006

There will be a set of labs to complement your reading and homework assignments.  Tentatively, the labs are titled Diffraction I, Diffraction II, Lasers, and your project is on "Image processing using optical Fourier transforms and spatial filtering."

Homework assignments are from Hecht's book "Optics", fourth edition.

Homework assignments will be discussed in tutorial sessions if necessary after I look them over.

Set # 1  -  Ch. 10 - Problems 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 23, 32, 35, 39

Set # 2  -  Ch. 11 - Problems 1, 6, 8, 9, 11, 19, 20, 24, 26

Set # 3  -  Ch. 12 - Problems 2, 3, 4, 7

Write up a short report about the setup we constructed in the lab, and include a drawing showing the optical transform of the "square mesh" object.  Be sure to indicate the locations of the various lenses and the optical filter slit.  Did you measure the grating periodicity?  How wide is the slit needed to filter out the higher order periodicity of the mesh?
